Jamstack & Nature: Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions by Charm Industrial

For many years, humans have been using the environment and abusing what it has given us. And now, we have put the environment in danger.

We are deeply indebted to nature and it is a well-known fact that we must do our best to protect it. Charm Industrial's mission of "permanently removing CO₂ from the atmosphere" is exactly what we need to do.

The Jamstack community is also focused on using technology in a more sustainable way. As a result, the Bejamas team jumped at the opportunity to partner with Charm Industrial, with the goal of informing more customers about their carbon removal subscription and encouraging purchases.

1. Background of Charm Industrial

In 2018, a group of engineers joined forces to tackle the difficult yet crucial task of reversing generations of environmental destruction through complete removal of CO₂.

Peter Reinhardt, Kelly Hering, and Shaun Meehan founded Charm Industrial in San Francisco.

Let's take a brief look at the science behind it.

I challenged myself to use my knowledge as an engineer to convert biomass, which is waste, into bio-oil through a process called fast pyrolysis.

After being converted into bio-oil, it is injected deep underground as negative emissions or reformed to produce green hydrogen for use as fuel or industrial chemicals.

As an example, this technology has contributed to a reduction of 1000 tons of CO₂ for Shopify.

However, they had one more challenge. That was to find a better way to promote and sell their products to customers.

2. Promoting CO₂ Removal with Jamstack

When their team contacted us, seeking a clean, reliable, and user-friendly website that would enable online purchases, we were able to clearly envision how Jamstack could contribute.

Our team, who shares the mission of "creating a better world for the future", has started working on the following tasks to fulfill their requests.

  • Building a New Homepage
  • Automating the Payment Process
  • Design changes to promote corporate biomass purchasing

3. Building Charm Industrial's Jamstack website

Their website's main point had to be both durable and eye-catching in design, providing information to customers and encouraging product purchases.

Therefore, we have created a static site using the Jamstack approach, a headless CMS, to provide all the necessary information for those considering purchasing from Charm Industrial in a visually appealing manner.

3-1 Stack

Our stack included amazing tools such as the following:

3-1-1 Gatsby.js

We chose Gatsby with simplicity in mind. This allows us to combine common features using React, GraphQL, and Webpack, making it easy to build static websites without pain or effort.

3-1-2 STORYBLOCK CMS

In order to make our site as sustainable as possible, we wanted to build a fast site in the most reliable way possible, so we used Storyblok as our headless content management system. By adopting Storyblok, the Charm team was able to make edits quickly without needing any code.

3-1-3 TailwindCSS

TailwindCSS is a CSS framework that prioritizes practicality and appearance. In the case of Charm, it was essential to have a unified color palette and typography to create a visually appealing website. Additionally, by minimizing the CSS bundle, we have also achieved our common goal of being environmentally friendly.

The request was for simplification and automation, with a focus on time. The next step is automation of the payment process.

4. Automated Payment Process

Here, we introduce the most important part of our work with Charm Industrial. They were manually processing purchases, but this was not realistic for a business with the ambitious goal of reaching an ARR of 1 million dollars.

Our team immediately began implementing a reliable and fast automated payment system using Stripe. This not only simplified the purchasing process for our customers, but also increased trust in purchasing on our website. We were able to achieve our goal of eliminating all manual work associated with previous payment methods.

Front lead developer Damian Rogulski says this.

Stripe has a feature called Stripe Checkout that has a very short development period, allowing you to create a checkout without much effort. It also includes a great dashboard with many options for setting up payments, as well as a powerful dashboard for administrators to manage all payment transactions.

To enhance the company's interest in purchasing biomass, the design has been renewed.

As a result, we were able to deliver a sophisticated website that not only boasts beauty and speed, but also functionality.

Comment from Ilya Volodarsky of Charm Industrial Co., Ltd.

We worked with Bejamas to build Charm Industrial's new website, allowing consumers and small businesses to create monthly carbon removal plans. Their team was a joy to work with, with clear communication and a passion for Charm's mission. The result is evident in the website. Not only did they deliver the new site on time, but it is also incredibly stable and has a fantastic UX. Thanks to their incredible speed and iterations over the course of a few months, we were able to improve all features and ship on time.

5. Contribution to Charm Industrial's Mission

Protecting the Earth is one of Bejamas' core values, and this project was very close to our beliefs.

I am delighted to have been able to successfully create this site and be a part of their mission by promoting sustainability through reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

We are proud to have taken action and made it possible to purchase CO₂ removal on a regular basis.
