Reasons to Seek Speed on Your Website
Reason01First thing in the morning, what website did you look at?
Many people have probably visited websites of companies such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, also known as GAFA. GAFA sites are the fastest in the world. Users who regularly use these sites have become accustomed to their speed.
Reason02User expectations are
already high from the beginning
Users who always use the world's fastest site will feel that it is difficult to use if it is even slightly slower.
In other words, it is like users who always watch the excellent performance of Olympic athletes witnessing an amateur level of immature performance.
Reason03Slow websites leave a worse impression than websites that crash.
For example, even if a major website experiences server downtime due to high traffic, it will be talked about in the media temporarily, but users will return once it is restored. This is because it is understood that server downtime is temporary.
On the other hand, once a site is perceived as slow, users will start to avoid it. This is because a slow site is considered permanently difficult to use.

Reason04Google does not deal with slow websites.
"If something is free, you are the product."
In other words, "In a free service, the user themselves becomes the product." Think about it from Google's perspective. Would you want to promote slow websites (i.e. websites with a poor user experience) at the top of search results?
As a result, slow websites will also have a lower SEO ranking, causing even more users to stay away.
Core Web Vitals
Google provides a clear indicator called "Core Web Vitals" for website performance. Since the June 2021 Google update, this indicator has become the most important factor in SEO.
The three elements of Core Web Vitals are as follows:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Loading Time
- This is the time it takes to load the page. Strictly speaking, it is the rendering time of the largest content (image or text block) on the page. If it is within 2.5 seconds, it is considered Good (fast enough), and if it is 4.0 seconds or more, it is considered Poor (not fast enough).
- First Input Delay (FID): Interactivity
- This is the time it takes for the browser to respond to the first action (such as a click or tap) performed by the user on the page. It is ideal for the response time to be less than 100 milliseconds.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Page Stability
- This indicates how many unexpected layout shifts occurred during page loading. For example, if the position of a button changes when trying to click it, the user cannot perform satisfactory operations.
CLS is calculated as "shifted area x shifted distance", and is considered Good (良好) if less than 0.1, and Poor (不十分) if 0.25 or more.
The paradigm shift from LAMP to Jamstack is happening right now.
In the West, it has become common to create websites using a new concept called Jamstack.
LAMP
- Mechanism
- CMS such as WordPress retrieves the desired data from the server in response to user requests, transforms it into the appropriate format, and returns it as a response. In other words, it becomes a "dynamic" mechanism that generates pages every time a request is made.
Jamstack
- Mechanism
- Pre-generate the necessary pages beforehand and return the pre-generated pages as is in response to user requests.
- Benefits
- Jamstack has the following benefits:
-
Display Speed"Since there is no need for the process of generating a page every time there is a request from the user, the page can be displayed quickly."
-
StabilityBy generating pages in advance, you can avoid situations such as "the server is down and the page cannot be displayed."
-
ScalabilitySince it is separated from servers and databases, the site can be scaled up without being constrained by server structure or programming language.
-
SecuritySince there is no need to frequently communicate with servers and databases, there are no security holes that can be used as entry points for attacks, allowing for safe website publication.
-
Development Man-HoursWith Jamstack, the latest development methods and tools are adopted, making it easier to build websites than ever before. This reduces the burden on engineers and also reduces the time and cost of website deployment.
