Background

We want to reduce the burden on in-house translators and achieve greater operational efficiency.

Yokogawa Electric Corporation is the largest manufacturer of measurement and control equipment in Japan.

The Document Development Section of the IA-SS SDC Development Innovation Promotion Department creates and translates manuals related to control systems, including the following products.

・Integrated Production Control System (DCS) "CENTUM VP"

・Safety Instrumented System "ProSafe-RS"

In translation, it is necessary to translate a large volume of documents, amounting to several million characters annually, primarily from Japanese to English.

Several in-house translators are utilizing the translation software Trados to carry out translations.

In February 2020, we received an inquiry from Human Science while considering the introduction of machine translation to reduce the workload of in-house translators.

Reasons for Choosing Human Science

Smooth operation as a Trados plugin

In translation work, the integration of Trados and machine translation was essential.

Over several years, we conducted information gathering, trialed more than five machine translation services, and performed evaluations. However, the results indicated that they were insufficient for practical use in our operations due to issues such as "unstable performance" and "errors or lack of translation results."

Among them, we conducted a trial of Human Science's "MTrans for Trados" for two weeks starting from the end of February 2020.

・As a plugin for Trados, it operates smoothly. It has received good evaluations from those engaged in translation work.

The response to questions that arose during the trial was quick, and the support was thorough. I felt that the support was good and that I could trust them.

We received such an evaluation and have decided to proceed with the implementation.

Implementation Effects

Achieving deadlines that are difficult in traditional translation processes is now possible

Some of the translation tasks I was responsible for had very tight deadlines, and I felt that it would have been impossible to meet those deadlines without using MTrans for Trados.

When handling urgent translations, the presence of translations from MTrans for Trados significantly alleviates the pressure regarding deadlines.

Even in cases where the description is technically complex and the translator struggles to understand the content, MTrans for Trados tends to stick to a literal translation, allowing the user to grasp the content and refine it from there.

MTrans for Trados does not generate paraphrases or free translations, so there is no need to "interpret" the translated text. Even if the intended translation is not achieved, it is easier to identify areas that require editing.

The future challenge is to reduce the burden of post-editing. Although the quality of the translation is not an issue, it is necessary to manually correct the application of styles. Human Science Company has suggested a "custom engine" to customize terminology and expressions, as well as quality improvements by changing the translation process.
