Challenges of Japan Systems

Topic

In order to provide a highly shared security system overseas to our domestic customers, there was a need for Japanese localization. Although there was already a Japanese version available overseas, the translation quality was insufficient, so it was necessary to re-localize it in Japan, and we were contacted for this task.

The translation target was the UI, and since the original text contained prefixes/suffixes that should remain in English, it was necessary to understand the technical aspects while translating. Additionally, there was no glossary or style guide, so there was the challenge of needing to provide a clear and consistent translation while organizing the content.

Solutions of Human Science

Topic

  • We established a small dedicated team consisting of one project manager and one main reviewer, and progressed with the translation while aligning our work policy with the client on a weekly basis.

  • We independently created a configuration file to identify which parts of the text-based source file with listed labels are subject to translation and which are not, and provided a fair estimate by calculating a word count that closely reflects the actual workload.

  • Considering that this is a new translation without a glossary or style guide provided, we have proposed the optimal workflow.

Topic

First, by creating a glossary as part of the translation preparation, we aimed to unify the terminology. Specifically, we created a script in the programming language Python to extract frequently used terms from the source files. Below is the execution screen of the script.

Topic

By creating a glossary centered around frequently occurring nouns and solidifying the translations with our clients, we were able to reduce unnecessary revision costs later on and provide translations that meet our clients' quality requirements.

When translating a total of about 50,000 words with multiple workers, we eliminated inconsistencies in translation by sharing translation memory on the server, achieving a unified translation.

From Human Science representatives

Chika Takayama We frequently receive requests for UI translation, but this time we needed to provide a consistent translation in a restricted environment, such as limited access to actual devices.
We solidified the translations of frequently used terms with the client at the initial stage, and the ability to align translations while receiving weekly feedback during the translation process led to results that satisfied the client.
When translating text output from a system, it can be challenging to identify the translation areas and understand the necessary steps, but our company utilizes tools, programming, and years of localization experience to propose optimal estimates and workflows.
Even with vast source data, it is possible to achieve consistent translations through tools and managed workflows. We will continue to strive to provide services that can be of help to our clients.
