English Conversation Software Japanese Product Translation (Localization) Case Study

Inquiry from Rosetta Stone Japan Inc.

We have received a request from Rosetta Stone Japan Inc. to localize the UI, messages, user guides, and promotional content for their English learning materials.

The Japanese version was translated as one of the languages at our American headquarters, but in order to expand into the Japanese market, we were approached by our company to provide more natural sentence expressions that Japanese learners can learn more smoothly.

Human Science Solutions

We have established a system with one dedicated project manager, three translators, and one reviewer to ensure consistency in translation style and to be able to respond to sudden requests within a single teaching material.

The most important thing is the Japanese expression after translation.
We are working with experienced translators who specialize in soft sentence expressions for consumer product translations. We avoid literal translations and sometimes use free translations to make the Japanese easier to understand.
For example, even if the English expression is concise, it may be insufficient for Japanese learners, so we strive to provide detailed explanations. However, we must not deviate too far from the original meaning or make it unsuitable for learning.
To ensure this, we refer to comments from the English original creators at Rosetta Stone and communicate the translation intentions to our clients.
In addition, when representatives from the American headquarters of Rosetta Stone visit Japan, we participate in product study sessions to deepen our understanding of their materials.

Customer Feedback

Since requesting the localization of web promotion content in 2008, we have been working together for 5 years. Initially, we asked for translation of user guides in addition to content, but now we mainly request translation of UI and message for learning materials.
When there are modifications to the software at our headquarters in America, we have to request translations on a short deadline, but we are very grateful that you are able to adjust from estimation to delivery according to our desired deadline.
Even when there are questions about the translation, we can rely on the translation coordinator at Human Science to quickly confirm and provide peace of mind.
Since last year, we have also requested DTP editing for our pamphlets, and we are grateful for the smooth response.

From Human Science representative

In localizing the UI and messages of learning materials, there are parts where clear expressions are necessary so that learners do not get lost in their operations, and there are also cases where a tone that prompts learners is required in message expressions.
Depending on the type of materials and the target audience, it may be necessary to change the way of expression, and there may be times when it feels difficult, but we will strive to meet your desired quality.

We will work to improve efficiency through resource adjustment and internal collaboration to meet your desired delivery date, even for urgent projects.
