Nidec is a leading ophthalmic medical equipment manufacturer in Japan, currently expanding their business in three areas: medical, eyewear, and coating.

For this company, which is actively expanding overseas, reducing the translation costs and time for medical and eyewear equipment instruction manuals has become a challenge, and they were considering implementing machine translation.

Therefore, we have supported the introduction of machine translation to 5 languages (French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese) by clearly defining the cost-effectiveness and cost and time reduction rate through our machine translation consulting service.
As a result, Nidec was able to successfully reduce translation costs from English to multiple languages by "20%" compared to traditional human translation methods.

Solution

To successfully implement machine translation, it is important to select the most suitable machine translation engine and design the process according to the data to be translated.
We recommend that you use the data to be translated to conduct a quality evaluation in advance, and then select the optimal engine and design the process.

In Nidec's project, we supported the introduction of machine translation with the following steps.

Machine Translation Implementation Steps

① Machine Translation Quality Evaluation and Effect Verification (Conducted Quality Evaluation with Two Machine Translation Engines)

We have selected two machine translation engines that meet the criteria from multiple engines, and compared the translation quality and cost reduction rate using Nidec's data.
We have proposed an engine with high quality and expected cost reduction.

②Process Design (Proposing a Review Process by Native Translators)

To maximize the effectiveness of machine translation implementation, it is also important to carefully design the pre- and post-translation processes.

"In response to Nidec's request of "not wanting to lower translation quality even with the introduction of machine translation", we proposed adding a review process by translators in addition to the standard process of machine translation processing + post-editing (editing after translation)."

As a result, it has become possible to achieve a "accurate and easy to understand" translation quality that is comparable to human translation even when using machine translation.

The quality of the trial translations conducted using the designed process was evaluated by Nidec's overseas sales agents, and we received evaluations of "no issues with quality" for all languages.

③Operation (Responsible for operating machine translation engine and post-editing)

"Through the steps of machine translation quality evaluation and effectiveness verification, and process design, we have been implementing machine translation at Nidec since 2014."

At our company, we are responsible for the operation of machine translation engines and the continuous management of the process of "machine translation processing + post-editing + review".

Customer Feedback

After hearing from multiple translation companies about the introduction of machine translation, we decided to request support and actual operation of machine translation from Human Science, which has a wealth of experience in introducing machine translation and had the most suitable proposal for our company's conditions.

By conducting cost estimates and sample translations based on quality evaluations from multiple machine translation engines beforehand, we were able to confidently introduce machine translation.

By utilizing the knowledge of Human Science's machine translation, we were able to smoothly introduce machine translation, which was beneficial.

This is a case where we were responsible not only for consulting on the introduction of machine translation, but also for actual tasks such as post-editing and engine operation.

Nidec has been leading the way in introducing machine translation to other domestic companies. As of 2018, they have also started implementing machine translation for not only multilingual translation, but also Japanese-English translation.

Many domestic companies are now starting to work on introducing machine translation, but I believe that Nidec's case can serve as a best practice for many companies considering implementing machine translation.

Nidec is actively working on improving business efficiency through the acquisition and implementation of new technologies, and we are always inspired by their enthusiasm.

We hope to continue exchanging information on new technologies with Nidec, and work together to further improve our translation services.
