Nidek is a leading manufacturer of ophthalmic medical devices in Japan, currently operating in three areas: the medical field, the eyewear equipment field, and the coating field.


For the company, which is actively expanding overseas, reducing the translation costs and time for instruction manuals in the medical and eyewear equipment fields has become a challenge, and the introduction of machine translation was being considered.


We have utilized our machine translation consulting services to clearly define cost-effectiveness and cost and time reduction rates, and supported the implementation of machine translation into five languages (French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese).
As a result, Nidek successfully reduced translation costs from English to multiple languages by "20%" compared to traditional human translation.

①Evaluation of Machine Translation Quality and Effectiveness (Conducting quality assessment using two machine translation engines)

We selected two candidate machine translation engines from multiple options based on the criteria, and calculated the translation quality comparison and cost reduction rate using Nidec's data.
We proposed an engine that offers good quality and greater potential for cost reduction.



②Process Design (Proposing a Review Process by Native Translators)

To maximize the effectiveness of machine translation implementation, it is also important to carefully design the processes before and after machine translation.

In response to Nidec's request of "We want to implement machine translation, but we do not want to compromise on translation quality," we proposed adding a review process by translators to the standard machine translation process, which includes machine translation processing and post-editing.

As a result, even with machine translation, we have achieved a translation quality that is "accurate and easy to understand," comparable to human translation.

We received evaluations of the quality of trial translations conducted in the designed process from Nidec's overseas sales agents, and we received feedback that there were no quality issues in all languages.



③ Operation (We are responsible for the operation of the machine translation engine and post-editing)

Through the steps of "Machine Translation Quality Evaluation and Effect Verification" and "Process Design," Nidec began the introduction of machine translation in 2014.

Our company continuously handles the operation of machine translation engines and a series of processes including "machine translation processing + post-editing + review."
