On March 19, 2020, German company DeepL began offering automatic translation services for Japanese and Chinese.
What is DeepL
DeepL Translation is an online translation service that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning provided by DeepL, which is headquartered in Germany.
In 2020, the neural network integrated into DeepL Translation was significantly improved, allowing for more nuanced expressions compared to other translation services. This has earned DeepL a reputation for its high translation accuracy.

Until now, DeepL's high translation accuracy has been well-known overseas, but due to its limited language support to European languages, it has not been widely used in Japan.
As a result, there has been an increase in the number of people in Japan who have tried DeepL or compared it with other translation services.
It has also been featured on Twitter and online news media, and has gained a reputation for being more accurate than Google Translate when compared to DeepL.
We have received requests from our customers to "try out DeepL" and "introduce it into their business."
In this article, we will introduce the results of our verification on whether DeepL can be used for translating business emails.
As a common translation that occurs within the company, emails exchanged with overseas offices and customers are listed.
We compared the translation accuracy of DeepL, Google, and Microsoft by automatically translating Japanese emails into English.

1. Evaluation Method for DeepL Translation Accuracy
We extracted 100 sentences from our internal emails and evaluated the translated text using the following four levels. The evaluation was done manually.
・Excellent: The original meaning is accurately translated without any omissions.
・Good: Some words are incorrect or missing, but the overall meaning of the sentence is translated correctly.
・Medium: Partially translated correctly, but the overall meaning of the sentence is incorrect.
・Poor: The entire sentence is translated incorrectly.
2. DeepL Translation Accuracy Evaluation Results
1st place was DeepL.
When combining Excellent and Good, which can be used almost as is, DeepL had the highest score with 96 sentences, followed by Google with 89 sentences and Microsoft with 86 sentences.
The time spent on emails in daily work accounts for a considerable percentage, but by using DeepL, it is expected that the translation work for emails can be greatly streamlined.

3. About DeepL's Security
DeepL offers two automatic translation services: the free version, "DeepL Translation," and the paid version, "DeepL Pro."
The free version of "DeepL Translation" can be easily used from the website, but when you check the privacy policy of "DeepL Translation", it says that "the input text and its translation will be stored for a certain period of time for the purpose of improving and enhancing the translation algorithm", and it becomes clear that the original text and translated text may be reused for other purposes.
Translating the contents of emails containing confidential information with "DeepL Translation" poses a significant security risk.
The privacy policy for the paid version of "DeepL Pro" states that "the text entered and the translated text will not be saved on the server and will only be used during translation", and the original and translated texts will not be reused for other purposes.
When using DeepL to translate confidential information, it is essential to contract with DeepL and use "DeepL Pro" to ensure security.
