[Knowledge] Improve quality with Pre-edit for machine-translatable source text!

Of course, when translating, it is necessary to understand the original content correctly. This also applies to machine translation.
Especially in the case of machine translation, it is necessary to modify the original text to make it easier for the machine to translate, as it cannot understand the context before and after the text.
This process of rewriting the original text to make it easier for the machine to translate is called "pre-editing" or "pre-edit".

Pre-edit is especially effective when translating into multiple languages.
For example, let's consider a case where we are translating into 5 languages.
If the machine misunderstands one part of the original text, it will result in mistranslations in all 5 languages.
But what if we look at it from the opposite perspective?
By simply making one correction in the original text, we can eliminate the need to correct the translations in 5 different places.

In the case of multilingual translation, if the quality of the original text is poor, the workload for post-editing can increase by several times the number of languages, making pre-editing very important when aiming for cost reduction and quality improvement.

The graph below shows the quality improvement rate through pre-editing in projects handled by Human Science in the past.
We compared the quality of outputs when translating from English to Japanese and Spanish without pre-editing and with pre-editing. The evaluation was done using two types of engines, statistical-based and rule-based, and the quality was rated on a 4-level scale (Excellent, Good, Medium, Poor) for each translated sentence.
After pre-editing, it can be seen that both Excellent and Good ratings increased and the overall quality improved for all languages and engines.
