IT・FA分野の翻訳でよくある間違い④～上級文法より読みやすさを追求する～

分詞構文の様々な用法の中でも、本や記事などで一般的によく使われるのは、結果を表す分詞構文（SVO+現在分詞・・・）です。

まずは、「SVO+現在分詞」の一般的な例文をいくつか見ていきましょう。

Expenses were higher than we had anticipated, leading to a sizable loss.

(費用は予想より高くなり、かなりの損失になってしまいました。）

Vehicle crashes into building, causing over 3 million yen in damage.

(車両が建物に衝突し、300万円以上の損害を与えました。）

A good user interface provides a user-friendly experience, allowing the user to interact with the software in a natural and intuitive way.

(優れたユーザーインターフェイスによって使いやすくなり、ユーザーは自然で直感的にソフトウェアを操作できるようになります。)

IT・FA分野の翻訳でも、このように結果を表す分詞構文をうまく活用できるケースもありますが、使いすぎると、ユーザーにとって読みにくい訳文になることもあるため、注意が必要です。

例文で見ていきましょう。

1. 余計な分詞構文の用法①

・原文：クリアランスが多すぎるとブランクが皿形になって縁周りに長い紐状に連なるかえりができる。
・訳文（修正前）：The blank is dished if the clearance is excessive, producing long stringy burrs all around the edge.
・訳文（修正後）：Excessive clearance will dish the blank and produce long stringy burrs all around the edge.

修正前の文章は決して文法や構成的に間違いではありませんが、結果を表す分詞構文より修正後の「A ＋接続詞（and）＋ B」構成のほうが、よりシンプルでユーザーにとって読みやすくなります。

（※修正前の受動態「is dished」を「will dish」に変えたことも読みやすさにつながります。）

2. 余計な分詞構文の用法②

・原文：この組立方だと作業を半または全自動化して1個当り組立コストを実質的に下げることができる。
・訳文（修正前）：A semi or fully automatic operation is possible with this assembly, allowing assembly cost per unit to be substantially reduced.
・訳文（修正後）：Such assembly lends itself to a semi or fully automatic operation with substantial reduction in per unit assembly cost.

こちらの修正前の文章も、文法や構成的に間違いではないですが、修正後の前置詞（with）を使った構成のほうがシンプルで、ユーザーにとって読みやすくなります。

続けて、「SVO+現在分詞」構成を二つの文章に分けて、読みやすくした例を見ていきましょう。

3. 余計な分詞構文の用法③

・原文：サーボモータと機械がギアで結合されている場合、送りねじが回転したことで位置検出を行いますので、セミクローズドループ方式よりも位置決め精度が高くなります。
・訳文（修正前）：When the servo motor and machine are connected by a gear, the position is detected from the rotation of the feed screw, resulting in more precise positioning than the semi-closed loop method.
・訳文（修正後）：When the servo motor and machine are connected by a gear, the position is detected from the rotation of the feed screw. This results in more precise positioning than the semi-closed loop method.

原文が一文であることから修正前の訳文も一文になっていますが、修正後のように、二つの文章に分けることでユーザーにとって読みやすい文章になります。

4. 表内の表現でよくある間違い例文④

・原文：ファイルやフォルダには、詳細なアクセス権が設定できるため、万が一メールの誤送信があった場合でも情報漏えいのリスクを軽減します。
・訳文（修正前）：Detailed access permission can be set for files and folders, thereby reducing the risk of information leaks even if an email is sent to the incorrect person.
・訳文（修正後）：Detailed access permission can be set for files and folders. This reduces the risk of information leaks even if an email is sent to the incorrect person.

この例も、例③と同様に、章を二つに分けるほうが読みやすいと判断しました。
このような場合、分詞構文以外にも、以下のようなⒶⒷ方法で文章をつなぐケースも時々見かけます。しかし、可能な限り、より簡単な文法や構成を活用するか、文章を分けることをおすすめします。

Ⓐ　「前置詞＋関係代名詞」の使用（読みづらい）

Detailed access permission can be set for files and folders, by which the risk of information leaks is reduced even if an email is sent to the incorrect person.

Ⓑ　「従属節＋主節」構成の使用（読みづらい）

Because detailed access permission can be set for files and folders, the risk of information leaks is reduced even if an email is sent to the incorrect person.

個人的に、全ての英文法の中で分詞構文が一番重要な文法だと思っています。しかし、翻訳のレビューの際、正しく使われている分詞構文を修正し、別の文法や構成に変えるケースが度々あります。FAやITなどの翻訳は、テクニカルライティングの要素に厳密に従い、「おしゃれで上級な文法や構成＜読みやすさ」を常に意識する必要があるからです。
