Merits of Using DITA

When using software such as FrameMaker and InDesign, difficulties arose when trying to reutilize certain content due to the large nature of each file. DITA works by splitting a text into different topics. Each topic is only 4, 5 sentences long, and therefore, each component can be easily found and used in your next project.

  • FrameMaker and InDesign

A book format limited by the need for sequencing

  • Complete as one entire document unit
  • Not easily reusable
  • Production is made to be done in sequential order
  • Formatting, layout, style, and terminology all saved to each creator
  • Layout is specified for each text
  • Features of DITA

A networked topic-based format

  • Completed in one topic unit
  • Based on the ability to reuse content
  • Multiple tasks can be done concurrently
  • Formatting, layout, style, and terminology can all be controlled separately
  • The layout for text can all be selected from a separate style sheet

Besides the above DITA features, the following merits can greatly reduce costs:
  • The reduction of errors from the use of similar or same text from different product versions
  • Multilingual localization becomes easier
  • The time spent on manual creation and checking/proofreading can be greatly reduced

  • What is DITA?

DITA stands for Darwin Information Typing Architecture It is an architecture proposed by OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) for the production, management, and use of information based in XML. The information and content can be reused in a variety of different contexts, and can be output in a range of formats including PDF and HTML.
