GPT-4 Turbo, customizable GPTs including ChatGPT, has been released.

1.GPT-4 Turbo

1-1. What is GPT-4 Turbo?

On November 6, 2023 (local time), OpenAI announced the release of their new model for ChatGPT, GPT-4 Turbo. As the name suggests, Turbo has improved speed compared to GPT-4 and now includes information up to April 2023 in its training data, allowing for conversations about more recent topics. The previous version only included information up to September 2021. However, while it now includes relatively recent information, it does not include any information after April 2023. To obtain the most up-to-date information, external mechanisms such as web search plugins will need to be utilized. Currently, GPT-4 Turbo is only available through API access, but it is expected to be released for ChatGPT Plus users within the next few weeks.

1-2. About the Context Window

In GPT-4 Turbo, the context window has been expanded from 8,192 tokens to 128,000 tokens. The context window refers to how much information can be stored per chat session, similar to human short-term memory. The larger the capacity of the context window, the more complex and longer interactions are possible. It should be noted that the counting method for tokens is different for Japanese, where hiragana counts as 1 token per character and kanji counts as 2-3 tokens per character. On the other hand, in English, tokens roughly correspond to the number of words. Due to the different counting methods, English allows for a wider use of the context window. 128,000 tokens would be equivalent to being able to read an entire thin paperback book in Japanese.

2. GPTs

2-1. What are GPTs?

OpenAI also announced and released a service called GPTs. GPTs allows you to customize ChatGPT for specific purposes. The customization process itself is done through chat, so no special knowledge is required. You can customize by passing documents, files, etc. to the base ChatGPT and giving your own instructions. Optional features include web search, image generation with DALL-E, code execution, and external API calls. The customized version can also be shared with others. OpenAI has announced the launch of a store service called GPT Store, where customized versions can be sold and distributed.

2-2. How to Create GPTs

ChatGPT Plus users can access the GPTs service from https://chat.openai.com/gpts/editor. When you access it, the following screen will be displayed.

 

On the left side is GPT Builder, where you can input customization instructions in the chat box below and customize with ChatGPT. The initial screen is in English, but you can communicate in Japanese. For example, if you input "teach me how to do it", it will explain how to customize GPTs.

 

 

You can upload a file by clicking on the clip icon in the chat box.

 

 

Supported file formats include office documents such as Word and Excel, as well as HTML, PDF, and CSV. For a list of supported file formats, please refer to https://platform.openai.com/docs/assistants/tools/supported-files.

 

You can try the customized GPT on the right side of the screen. Even during customization, you can test and improve by repeating the chat exchange until you get the desired behavior. Also, by clicking "Preview" at the top of the right screen, you can delete the test exchange.

 

2-3. Distribution Method for GPTs

Once your original GPT is complete, you can click the "Save" button in the upper right corner to save it. If you want to distribute it, please select "Only people with a link" and click the "Confirm" button. Then, a page similar to regular ChatGPT will be displayed, but if you check the URL, it will start with "https://chat.openai.com/g/". Please copy this URL and distribute it. Note that the person using it must also be subscribed to ChatGPT Plus.

 

 

3. Summary

OpenAI announced GPT-4 Turbo on November 6, 2023. The speed has improved and the training data has been updated until April 2023. GPT-4 Turbo is currently only available through API and will be available to ChatGPT Plus users within a few weeks. A new service called GPTs has also been announced, allowing customization of ChatGPT for specific purposes. It will be available for sale and distribution through GPT Store.
